What electrical does a home sauna or cold plunge need?

What the makers actually ask for
| Product | What the page says |
|---|---|
| Relax Silver Elite (portable infrared) | 1,400 W, AC 120V |
| Finnmark FD-2 (infrared, 2-person) | 1,750 W, 120V, dedicated 15A circuit, NEMA 5-15 outlet (retailer listing) |
| Almost Heaven Hinton (infrared, 2-3 person) | 120V, 20-amp dedicated outlet |
| Almost Heaven Salem / Pinnacle / Auburn / Logan (traditional) | 6 kW heater, 240V, 30-amp requirement, hard-wired |
| Plunge All-In | Dedicated 120V 15A circuit, GFCI cord |
| Ice Barrel chiller | ~115V, max fuse 15A |

When the maker and the rule of thumb disagree
A 6 kW heater on 240V draws 25 A (6,000 ÷ 240). Heaters count as continuous loads, and the usual rule sizes the circuit at 125% of the draw, about 31 A, which puts you on the next standard breaker size. Almost Heaven's pages say "30-amp requirement." Third-party sites publish 35 A for 6 kW (SaunaCosts), and Dundalk's retailer points to the heater manuals (HUUM and Harvia: 25 A draw). Don't pick a number from a website. Give your electrician the heater model and its manual.
What it costs to run
Cost per hour = heater kW × your price per kWh. Using the U.S. EIA's average residential price, year to date through July 2026 (Table 5.6.B):
| U.S. average (18.19¢) | North Dakota (12.36¢) | California (33.25¢) | Hawaii (46.28¢) | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 6 kW traditional, 1 hour | $1.09 | $0.74 | $2.00 | $2.78 |
| 1.75 kW infrared (FD-2), 1 hour | $0.32 | $0.22 | $0.58 | $0.81 |
These are upper bounds: thermostats cycle the heater off once the room is hot. Cold plunge makers mostly publish horsepower, not watts, so we don't estimate chiller running cost. Plunge Chill is an exception: it states about 4.25 kWh to cool its tub from 90°F to 39°F.
Safety listings matter for inspections
Inspectors can require electrical equipment to be listed by a recognized lab (ETL, UL, CSA). None of the maker product pages we checked showed a listing; only one retailer listing did (Finnmark FD-2), and we confirmed it in the lab's own directory: Finnmark's FD-2 appears in Intertek's ETL directory (UL 875). For anything else, ask the seller for the listing file number.
